How Much Money Do Jewelry Designers Make?

If you’re considering a career in the jewelry design industry, it’s important for you to understand the value of your time and effort. Getting started, it’s important to have some background information regarding the typical salary of a jewelry designer. In laying the groundwork of your business- whether you pursue partnering with a wholesaler, selling your pieces at craft fairs, starting an Etsy store online, etc., here are some things to remember moving forward:

  • Location matters- Differentiations in market demographic, customer lifestyle/income etc. is highly dependent upon the area in which you wish to sell your work. Therefore, you need to realize that the price at which you can reasonably list your jewelry may have to change depending on whether you’re selling at a country craft fair, or in a high end boutique in Manhattan.
  • Everything takes time- Getting started, try to develop an ultimate goal you wish to achieve in your professional career. Do you want to open your own shop? Do you want to partner with an established local accessory store owner and work with him or her? In making decisions like this, you have to consider the ways in which you can expect salary to be affected based on the amount of business commitment you’re hoping to make.
  • Make a model- You’ll need to establish a business model before you can start thinking about money. Is outsourcing appropriate for you? If you hire other people to help you create mass amounts of your designs, you’ll have more supply to sell- but you’ll also have to pay those who work for you. These are all elements you’ll need to consider.

According to Glass Door salary reporting, the average jewelry designer in New York City varies depending on the company for which they work. On average however, jewelry design salaries seemed to fluctuate somewhere between $50,000 and $78,000 annually.
