What is Front-End Web Development?

What is Front-End Web Development?

If you are interested in a technology-oriented creative career, you should consider looking into front-end web development roles.

Front-end web developers are the professionals who code websites to function properly on the internet. While a web designer is the individual who designs what pages on the internet actually look like (color, layout, aesthetic), the front-end web developer is the individual who takes that design concept and writes it in code so that it can actually function and appear on the web the way the designer intended it to.

For example, if a local restaurant owner decides they would like a simple website homepage with some images of their food featured, along with an online ordering portal where users can browse a menu and place orders online, a front-end web developer is the professional that would be able to create this website with all the working functions it needs.

All the things that make a website work properly- a shopping cart feature with add-to cart functionality, compatibility with a payment processing feature- are all things a frontend web developer is able to code and build.

How Long Does It Take To Learn Front-End Web Development?

The New York Institute of Art and Design offers an online, self-paced course for aspiring front-end web developers. In this program, you will have the ability to login and work from home, or from wherever you’re comfortable working. As long as you have access to the internet, you can sign in and complete work in your online class, entirely at your own pace.

In this program, you will have reading assignments and videos to watch as well as hands-on projects to complete and submit for grading from your mentor. You will study three core programming languages (HTML, CSS & JavaScript) and practice skills using a software called JS Fiddle as you discover how to maintain websites and implement design prototypes on a live website.

Once you enroll in this program, you are given two years to graduate, but you are free to work at your own pace. Some NYIAD students work full time and are only able to dedicate a few days a month to study and complete projects- students like this might take the full two years to graduate and earn their certificate. Others have more time to dedicate to their studies and are able to login every week to get work done- these students are able to graduate sooner, often in 6 months- 1 year.
