Feng Shui in the Year of the Goat

When you're thinking of using the principles of Feng Shui in interior design, it's tempting to think it's all just about choosing a color that makes you feel good, clearing out the clutter, and making sure your bed doesn't face the bathroom.

But this ancient art of placement has many layers to it, and understanding Feng Shui deeply can take years of study and practice.

One element of Feng Shui that isn't talked about often is appropriate for this time of year. The Chinese New Year began this year on February 19th, as we be ushered in the Year of the Goat.

The Year of the Goat and can affect people differently. Goats are cautious, so apply caution this year, hold back on enthusiasm until you are certain of design choices. Don't be over-ambitious or over-confident in your styling choices. Nonetheless, it's important to use your creativity more than ever in this conservative year.

The Goat come 8th in the Chinese zodiac. The 12 zodiac animals are: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.

  • Lucky Colors: brown, red, purple
  • Lucky Numbers: 2, 7
  • Lucky Flowers: carnation, primrose

Designing according to the Goat means adding harmony, positive flow, good health, and prosperity.

The Goat is the Wood Element, so think about bringing in plants, flowers, and the color green. Green or striped sofa pillows or an ottoman would work great for this year. It is important if you do add sofa pillows to make sure not to go overboard and get too many of them. Too many pillows on a sofa can be a metaphor for not wanting people over to your home.

Since the goat is about community, this is a good time to make your home cozier and inviting, think about entertaining more at home. Hosting more dinner parties will surely be more fun than having an event elsewhere.

The goat prefers to be in a flock, and enjoys the comfort and safety of a community. This is a good year to do things with others/as a team. New connections are possible at this time.
