When it comes to floral design services, most professionals are hired to fulfil some general creative requests of their clients- most people don’t show up to a florist’s without any ideas of their own.
In most cases, higher end clients will browse local florist options and ultimately chose to hire you if they tend to like your general aesthetic (something that should always be present in your work, regardless of the specific project). From there, they will likely approach you with their own vision. However, it’s important to maintain your role as the expert. If someone makes a request for a look that you don’t think is appropriate for a certain reason, you need to courteously speak up with professional recommendations. The client clearly came to you for your skills, experience and insight, so you should never feel hesitant to subsequently share it with them when they need to hear it.
However, be sure not to confuse personal preferences with coherent advice. There is surely a right and wrong way to consider specific requests and channel them through your own filter. If your client mentions peonies, sunflowers and roses all together for example, you might suggest pairing just the peonies and roses if they’re looking for a romantic arrangement or sunflowers with other wild blooms to achieve a more rustic look.
At the end of the day, the client just wants the arrangement to look good and they want your professional assistance in achieving this. Never be nervous to contribute to the creative process before you get started on the arrangements.
